In 2015, solar energy adoption was increasing, but the process remained complicated and costly.
In their 20% time, a group of Googlers created a tool using Maps (plus a few other things) that allows people to calculate their roofs’ solar potential and to get connected to local installers.
My team crafted the narrative and helped design the total user experience. Our brand and product recommendation helped turn a 20% effort into an official Google Access & Energy project supported by a full-time team. Within a year, the Project Sunroof U.S. pilot was launched. We made a video to unveil it to the world, which garnered 1M views within the first week.
Project Sunroof was declared a United Nations Momentum for Change Recipient in 2016 and referenced in President Obama’s Clean Energy Savings for All Americans Initiative.
