Some friends from the Google EDU team came to us with a prototype they’d hacked together using Cardboard. We instantly saw the potential for immersive VR content, but understood the challenges:
Landing innovative tech in classrooms in a supportive and sustainable way is tough.
Teachers spend hours everyday trying to create engaging lesson plans; they have no time to waste on awkward tech.
VR, at the time, felt like a novelty in classrooms. Its role was unclear.
First, my team created the Google Expeditions brand vision and narrative, which would help it become the first accessible VR platform for the classroom.
Next, we developed a service design recommendation for the Pioneer Program, which went on to win a Webby Award in Mobile: Best Practices.
Last, my team created some of the first CG Expeditions to push the boundaries of the platform and to demonstrate the power of VR in bringing abstract concepts to life.
Google Expeditions went from a good idea to becoming a great product that brought over 3 million students on virtual field tripes in less than 3 years.
